This shot was a little bit tricky. I wanted to get the flame in the photograph, but I needed flash to get the exposure on the steak. I tried rear curtain sync, but I was struggling with the appropriate shutter speed. Eventually I gave up on that and just went for broke by taking as many shots as I could. One of them finally snapped during a flame up on the grill so I got my fire.
I was using on camera flash, but I had a diffusion dome over it. I also turned it to a about a 45° angle. With a little experimenting, I managed to avoid too many harsh shadows. I keep focusing on how many things I tried, but it's worth mentioning that all this still had to be done relatively quickly... I mean the meat didn't stop cooking just because I was fiddling with the camera.
