Macro

Shot this tick today using extension tubes and a reverse mounted 50mm f1.8. The tick is hanging to the edge of a covered petri dish with two hot shoe flashes on either side at a 45 degree angle. The shot was handheld (I cooled the tick temporarily, but they recover quickly).

This is an adult female gulf coast tick (Amblyomma maculatum). They are present in the coastal regions of the south eastern United States and have historically been responsible for significant economic losses in cattle. Today they are recognized as vectors of the human pathogen Rickettsia parkeri and the dog pathogen Hepatozoon americanum.
